In the province of Ica, one of the poorest regions of Peru, we worked in collaboration with the medical team at Oftalmosalud (www.oftalmosalud.pe) and the Mundo Libre Institute (www.mundolibre.org.pe).
In a local newspaper, we advertised ‘free eye surgery for those in need’. Around 800 people were examined at Oftalmosalud in Ica. As a result of that fact that patients from poor rural regions encounter increased intraoperative complications, they were transferred to a fully-equipped surgical centre in Lima if necessary. Mundo Libre organised the free return trip from Ica to Lima, our ophthalmologists operated on the patients and were actively supported by the medical support staff from Oftalmosalud. The gratitude of the patients we operated on was immense.
